यदि आत्मा नित्य चेतनस्वरूप है तो बन्ध कोटि में क्यों आया? इसीलिए कहते है
ज्ञानं बन्धः
मन के साथ इन्द्रियों का संयोग होकर जो वृत्तिरूप ज्ञान होता है उनको आत्मा अनुभव करता है| ये ज्ञान ही बन्ध पद से कहा जाता है | कोई आत्मा शब्द के आगे आकार का प्रश्लेष निकल कर के 'अज्ञान' को बन्ध कहते हैं |
यह बन्ध तीन प्रकार के है, जिसे आगे के सूत्र बताते है –
If the soul is eternally conscious, then why did it come into the category of bondage? That is why it is said:
Knowledge is bondage.
The soul experiences the knowledge that arises from the union of the mind and the senses. This knowledge is called bondage. Some people say that ignorance is bondage, which is derived from the prefix "a" (not) and the word "atma" (soul).
This bondage is of three types, which are explained in the following sutras:
The text is about the nature of the soul and how it is bound by ignorance. The first sentence asks why the soul, which is eternally conscious, would come into the category of bondage. The answer is that the soul experiences knowledge, which is a form of bondage. This knowledge arises from the union of the mind and the senses. The second sentence explains that some people believe that ignorance is the root cause of bondage.
The final sentence states that there are three types of bondage, which are explained in the following sutras.
